MAKING A DIFFERENCE: 4 GIRL GUIDES TAKE ON THE WORLD
Check out this great article on our Fort McMurray girls who are travelling this summer. Article
Everyone’s been wondering…. Well here’s a glimpse of the new uniform for adults and girls.
Girl Guides of Canada (GGC) is releasing a brand-new navy blue uniform T-shirt for girls and women in advance of the fall 2019 Guiding year. Moving to this new T-shirt as our primary uniform piece is a big step towards ensuring our uniform is not a barrier to membership or participating in Guiding.
Among the features of the new uniform T-shirt:
- Girls in every branch and Guiders will wear the same uniform T-shirt
- Girls will no longer need to buy multiple uniform pieces and will only need to buy a new shirt as needed and not every time they switch branches.
- Thanks to the excellent feedback and suggestions from our members, the new T-shirt will come in a range of options to make it more inclusive. There’ll be a range of fits (fitted, classic, fuller) and options that address the different needs of our members (short and long sleeve, longer body length for those that would like a tunic style).
- The T-shirt will be offered in a softer, breathable fabric.
Guiders and girls who love our current uniform options can continue to wear any branded GGC product as appropriate for their Guiding event. For formal and public occasions, members can continue to wear their Guiding tie or scarf.
We’re excited to collaborate with our members in envisioning all the possibilities for pairing our new uniform with other Guiding items, such as scarves, badges and other insignia. Look for more details to be released later in the year.
2017 NSERC Awards for Science Promotion
To Dream, to dare, to do. If you ask Edna Dach, these are exemplary words to live by. As a former teacher, Dach has always had a keen interest in sharing her passion for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). She continues to volunteer for science outreach, and her actions have had a tremendous impact across Alberta.
Over the years, she has shared her love and passion of science with future generations of potential scientists and highlighted the need for more women in STEM. Through her ongoing volunteer work, she continues to inspire young Canadians to consider the sciences as more than just an obligation in school, but as a fascinating world to be explored.
In the early 1990s she launched the Young Scientists Conference for students in the Edmonton area. Still going on today, these conferences provide junior high school students with a day filled with excitement as they explore STEM topics. Thanks to enthusiastic keynote speakers, hands-on experiments, and other activities, students get to see STEM in a new light.
Once a Girl Guide herself, Dach has also continued to volunteer in the Guiding movement throughout her career, taking on many roles centred on science outreach. The Guides provide her with an opportunity to promote STEM career paths as options for girls and young women. Her articles in the Canadian Guider magazine have addressed topics like “Computer Literacy – It’s a Girl Thing” and “Science Matters.” She has also organized training sessions and camps with STEM as the core theme.
Her advocacy for women in science has also extended outside of the Guiding Movement. Working with Women in Scholarship, Engineering, Science, and Technology, Dach has helped with their annual Choices Conferences, which bring hundreds of Grade 6 girls to the University of Alberta for a day of STEM activities. She has also been involved with the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology through their Women in Technology and Trades initiative, which encourages the recruitment of women to the Institute.
